Commentary

Wassiliou-Seibt correctly resolves the problem posed by this inscription in determining the owner's maternal line and his family name; the last two words form a seven-syllable hemistich and must be taken together. Theodore Kastamonites (ca. 1099-1166) is almost certainly to be identified as the brother of Euphrosyne Kastamonitissa, who married Andronikos Doukas Angelos and bore the emperor Isaac Angelos (1185-1195, 1203-1204).
