Commentary

Cheynet noted this seal in his article on the katepanos of Italy but read the name as Maroules (it is clear, however, that our reading Magoulas conforms with the epigraphy). He identified the saint as the rarely depicted Longinos, venerated in particular in Cappadocia, whence the owner may well have come. See "Les catépans d'Italie," in Νέα Ῥώμη 4 (2007).
