Previous Editions

DO Seals 2, no. 8.18. Cf. Wassiliou-Seibt, Siegel mit metrischen Legenden I, no. 796.
Cf. two specimens from the Athens Numismatic Museum: one, incorrectly read, in Sig., 191-192, then by Konstantopoulos, no. 95, who also added no. 94β, a specimen, that came from the Constantinopolitan Macrides collection, perhaps identical with the one published by A. Mordtmann, "Μολυβδόβουλλα Βυζαντινά ἐπαρχιῶν Εὐρώπης," Ἑλλ. Φιλολ. Σύλλ. 17 (1886), Suppl., 151, no. 25. See also Bees, Zur Sigillographie, 227 (insecure proposals for identification) and Laurent, Bulles métriques, no. 140). Another was found in the excavation of Corinth: Corinth XII, no. 2810. They all may come from the same boulloterion as the DO seal.

Translation

Ἐρωτικοῦ σφράγισμα τοῦ Βασιλείου κρίσις ἕποντος Ἑλλάδος καὶ Πελόπων.

The seal of Basil Erotikos who handles legal decisions in Hellas and the Peloponnesos.

Commentary

Two twelve syllable verses. In verse 2; κρίσις should be read as κρίσεις; at the end, all editors of the Athens specimens restored Πελοποννήσου; but we maintain that for sake of the metre the archaic Πελόπων was used as a poetic name indicating the Peloponnesians (cf. the common usage of ἡ Πέλοπος for the Peloponnesos). Cf. Bon, Péloponnèse, 194-95, with no further information on Basil Erotikos. On the family, cf. JÖB 38 (1978) 206-7.
