Late Roman and Early Byzantine Gold Coins from South-Eastern Europe: New Finds, New Questions

Two decades ago, information on the finds of Late Roman and Early Byzantine gold coins in South-Eastern Europe was limited to just over three dozen finds. Today, however, we can speak of at least two hundred coins. These have the potential to fundamentally change the perception of the place of this region in the system of relations between the local population and the Roman and Byzantine Empires, or within the territories beyond their borders. The project is dedicated to the study of these coins and will result in a publication of this unique material.

Professional Biography

I am a graduate of one of the oldest universities in Ukraine—the V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, where I received a good education and extensive experience in practical archaeology and scientific management. There, the area of my current scientific interests was formed, which lies in ancient numismatics and archaeology. After defending my doctoral thesis, two post-doctoral fellowships in Bonn and Warsaw and fellowships in Frankfurt/Main and Oxford were severe steps in shaping my disciplinary identity. My many years of intensive archaeological and numismatic research have resulted in more than 160 publications, monographs, and papers at more than 100 international conferences. My academic research experience allows me to successfully manage a project at the University of Warsaw and implement one of the most prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowships. Currently I’m a scientific adjunct at the Faculty of Archaeology, University of Warsaw.
