Object Study Session | Ittai Weinryb and Elizabeth Dospel Williams

This event is by invitation only

This object-focused study session will consider several artifacts found in the Dumbarton Oaks Byzantine Collection likely made in the Black Sea region. In many cases, the objects that we will discuss were miscategorized or misdated in earlier scholarship, due to art history’s traditional inadequacies in addressing the fluid and multicultural nature of Black Sea material and visual culture. The master class with thus consider questions of taxonomy, manufacture, iconography, trade, and history of collections through close study of a selected group of objects from the Black Sea region.

Following the masterclass, at 4 P.M. Professor Weinryb will deliver a lecture, “Dressing the Parts in Medieval Ukraine,” open to the local medievalist community.
