Florence Lee Powell photographs and writings on Chinese gardens, 1926–1943

The collection includes 141 glass lantern slides, 65 of which were never published, as well as manuscript fragments used as padding in the slides’ original housing case.

Inventory

Florence Lee Powell took these photographs starting in 1926 to illustrate her 1943 publication, "In the Chinese Garden : a Photographic Tour of the Complete Chinese Garden, with Text Explaining Its Symbolism, as Seen in the Liu Yuan (the Liu Garden) and the Shih Tzu Lin (the Forest of Lions), Two Famous Chinese Gardens in the City of Soochow, Kiangsu Province, China." The collection includes 141 glass lantern slides, 65 of which were never published. The manuscript fragments are small scraps of an original typescript of text for the book which were cut down and used as padding in the slides' original housing case.

Rights for materials created by Florence Lee Powell were transferred to Dumbarton Oaks in the deed of gift for the collection. Dumbarton Oaks is making those materials available for publication under a Creative Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 licenseRequest images.
