Commentary

It is very difficult to date this specimen. The monogram on the obverse suggests the sixth or seventh century, whereas the reverse inscription is more consistent with the tenth or eleventh century. The formula κατὰ Ἀλέξανδρον also poses problems of interpretation; in his unpublished catalogue of the Shaw collection, Laurent proposed that it meant "named for Alexander," in reference to the owner's family name. He noted a revival of this usage during the tenth and eleventh centuries.
