Obverse

Beautifully engraved bust of St. John the Baptist holding (r. hand) a long processional cross vertically, and blessing with his l. hand. On either side, vertical inscription: Ο|Α|ΓΙ,Ι|ΟΠΡ|Ο|Δ,: Ὁ ἅγιος Ἰωάννης ὁ Πρόδρομος. Border of dots.

Reverse

Inscription of six lines. Double border of dots.

Translation

Λέων ἀνθύπατος, πατρήκηος καὶ σταρτηγὸς (sic) τῆς Σάμου.

Leo anthypatos, patrikios and strategos of Samos.

Commentary

This seal contains two "mistakes" that should be attributed to the engraver: St. John blessing with his left hand (!) and the transposition of letters in στρατηγός.
