Theotokos, help your servant Meligalas, imperial spatharokandidatos, chartoularios of the genikon logothesion, and . . .

Commentary

On Meligalas’s career, see the commentary at BZS.1955.1.1042. On other, more legible seals, when Meligalas holds the rank of imperial spatharokandidatos and office of chartoularios of the genikon logothesion, he is also kommerkiarios of Thessalonike (BZS.1955.1.1028) or paraphylax of Abydos (BZS.1955.1.1067–1072). What remains of the fifth line makes it impossible to determine if either of these two offices, or some other, was originally included.

The type of invocative monogram on the obverse is not certain, but Meligalas uses type V on his other seals, so that is probably what appears here.
