Commentary
It is not clear why Constantine took it upon himself to write out his affiliation with the stratiotikon, since most provincial chartoularioi were in any case members of that service. Perhaps he was a chartoularios of the central office of the stratiotikon (τοῦ σεκρέτου: Listes, 115, line 14) who had acquired his position (for forty litrai: Cer., 694, lines 19-20) along with the lucrative duty to conduct the census of the theme of the Anatolikoi.
The name Constantine Euphyes is found on an eleventh-century seal published by Lihačev, IZIGI, 123 (=Laurent, Bulles métriques, no. 100). A judge Euphyes is mentioned in the Peira 42,4. Nicholas and Eustathios Euphyes were imperial notarioi in 1088: Patmos I, no. 48A, line 203 and no. 48B, line 222.
