Commentary

The facing armored, beardless imperial bust first appeared on solidi issued by Justinian I between 538 and 545 (DOC 1:69, no. 7), and continued to appear on the coins of Justin II, Tiberius II, and Maurice. This contrasts with the depiction of Justinian and his successors on seals, on which they appear wearing a chlamys.
