Agriculture

The diversity in Syria’s climate is reflected in the region’s varied agricultural practices.

The diversity in Syria’s climate is reflected in the region’s agricultural practices. In fact, it was agricultural production in Syria that contributed to its long-term status as one of the wealthiest regions of the eastern Mediterranean. In the northwest, olives and olive oil were produced; wine, too, was produced in the northwest and along the Mediterranean zone; grain was a plentiful cash crop. Animal husbandry was also abundant. The agriculture theme here thus encompasses rural and semi-rural agricultural installations, farms and farmsteads, threshing floors, vineyards, orchards, and olive and wine presses.
