On this page, Underwood discusses how the cruciform shape of the Holy Apostles is developed from a cube. Figure 1 on the document illustrates the text from verses 571–73 of Constantine the Rhodian’s Ekphrasis, which was translated by Glanville Downey (see here).
The ultimate goal of the reconstruction project on the church of the Holy Apostles was a comprehensive three-part publication that would present the architecture, the mosaic decoration, and the relevant texts that describe the lost monument. Paul Underwood had drafted several versions of his volume on the architecture by the time he left the project in 1950 to become the Fieldwork Director of the Byzantine Institute. This text was never published.
