Ninth Century

With the end of Iconoclasm in 843 figural religious imagery was again permitted on seals. The majority of Byzantines, however, were slow to resume the practice, showing a preference for a simple cross instead. Ninth-century letters are distinguished by their elongated forms and pronounced serifs.
