A native of Portuguese Madeira, Augusta Robley dedicated her book of eight colored lithographs—with explanatory essays by Reverend W.L.P. Garnons of Cambridge University—to her mother, Sarah Penfold, the owner of the Quinta da Achada estate north of the island’s capital Funchal. Curiously, her selection focused on imported plants—such as Coffea arabica and the edible chayote (Sechium edule), known by the locals as “chou-chou”—as well as Strelitzia reginae, the latter, according to Garnons, growing in Mrs. Penfold’s garden. A companion volume featuring the island’s flora, Madeira Flowers, Fruits, and Ferns, was published in the same year by Augusta’s younger sister Jane Wallas Penfold (1821–84), also an accomplished botanical artist.
